People
and Communities Can Grow
Community does not happen by itself. In healthy communities everyone
participates. People contribute, share responsibilities and some
agree to be servant leaders.
People join VRCities because they believe in its mission and want to benefit
from its many services. VRCities has been established so you can
help grow communities that in turn help you grow. We are all committed
to creating positive experiences that foster better relationships, learning
and fun. That's life!
The
Best Technology and Organization
Information technology and the Internet make it possible to take human
relationships to levels never achieved before. As implied by our mission
statement, VRCities is committed to harness these technologies to help
create, develop and support strong communities, online and offline.
VRCities pledges to use the best available Internet technology and organizing
principles to advance community. Right now a lot of knowledge and
organized effort is being used so that companies will make more money
with the Web. We believe that commerce is good because it can improve
people's lives, but community and human relationships are more basic.
Strong
Communities Require Volunteers, Partners and Good Leaders
Leaders are needed to make the VRCities the best communities "super-portal"
of all (right now it is the only one.)
We have set up a self-organizing process to encourage participation through
affiliate, associate, partnering and co-ownership programs. If you would

Virtual
Communities and Social Networking
To undestand the VRCities mission better and get some additional, relevant
background information, visit the following Wikipedia links about virtual
communities and social networking.
"A
virtual community or online community is a group of people that primarily
or initially communicates or interacts via the Internet. The dawn of
the "information age" found groups communicating electronically
rather than face to face. A "Computer-mediated community"
(CMC) uses social software to regulate the activities of participants.
An online community such as one responsible for collaboratively producing
open source software is sometimes called a development community. Significant
socio-technical change has resulted from the proliferation of Internet-based
social networks.[1]" Read

A
social network is a social structure made of nodes which are generally
individuals or organizations. It indicates the ways in which they are
connected through various social familiarities ranging from casual acquaintance
to close familial bonds. The term was first coined in 1954 by J. A.
Barnes (in: Class and Committees in a Norwegian Island Parish, "Human
Relations"). The maximum size of social networks tends to be around
150 people (Dunbar's number) and the average size around 124 (Hill and
Dunbar, 2002). Read
